Dining At The Royal George

Nestled in the historic village of Tintern, where the River Wye meanders through wooded valleys, dining at The Royal George is a truly memorable experience. With four distinctive venues on-site, we offer something for every appetite—whether you're fresh off the Wye Valley Walk, escaping the city for a countryside stay, or simply craving a perfectly brewed coffee and a buttery scone.

Upper Deck Dining Room

Dining Options At The Royal George

Each of our dining spaces has its own character, but all share the same ethos: quality, comfort, and a connection to the place we call home.

Upper Deck Restaurant

For something a little more refined—but never formal—the Upper Deck offers an elegant dining experience that still feels grounded in the countryside. Open for dinner and special occasions, it’s a space where the craft of the kitchen takes centre stage, thanks to the vision of Executive Chef Gareth Hope and his team.

Menus evolve with the seasons, celebrating the finest local produce and time-honoured techniques with a contemporary twist. Whether you choose to dine indoors or out on our elegant outdoor terrace, the atmosphere remains relaxed and welcoming. There’s no need for dress codes, just bring a love of good food, great wine, and thoughtful hospitality.

Lower Deck Restaurant

At the heart of the hotel, the Lower Deck delivers all the comfort of a traditional pub, elevated by real culinary expertise. Here, you’ll find reimagined classics like ale-battered fish with pink tartar sauce, Welsh rarebit with ale ketchup, or our Royal George Burger stacked with crispy bacon and Penderyn whisky jam.

The atmosphere is lively but laid-back, making it perfect for relaxed lunches, cosy dinners, and everything in between. And yes, the shoestring fries with truffle and Pecorino are as good as they sound.

More details on both these venues, including menus and seasonal specials, can be found on our food and drink page.

The Garden

Open Wednesday to Sunday, the Garden brings a little rustic theatre to your plate with wood-fired pizzas served under our bespoke dining tent. It’s the ideal spot for al fresco dining—whether you’re celebrating with friends, refueling after a cycle, or simply enjoying the view with a glass of something local in hand.

Favourites include The Royal George with pulled chicken and nduja, or the Vegetarian topped with oyster mushrooms and caramelised onions. It’s relaxed, convivial, and undeniably delicious.

The Café

From early morning until late afternoon, the Café offers a welcoming space for guests and locals alike. It’s the perfect place to start your day with a hot coffee and a warm sultana scone, or to linger over a light lunch, perhaps a smoked salmon baguette with dill sour cream, or a fresh salad of feta, broad beans, and mint.

With both indoor nooks and outdoor seating, it’s a favourite for walkers, cyclists, and anyone just passing through. The full Café offering is part of what makes staying at The Royal George such a well-rounded experience.

Do I Need To Book?

While the Café, Lower Deck, and Garden welcome walk-ins, the Upper Deck is popular with locals and visitors alike—so we do recommend booking, especially for dinner or larger parties.

To reserve a table at the Upper Deck, you can now book directly through our online reservation system. If you’re planning for a group of six or more, we kindly ask that you email us so we can make the proper arrangements. For those planning a longer escape to the Wye Valley, feel free to book your stay online or contact us with any questions ahead of your visit.
