The Royal George

About The Royal George

Settled in the heart of Tintern, The Royal George stands as a testament to time. Established in 1598 and serving as a hotel since 1829, our weathered façade echoes stories of generations past. Original wood beams and carefully preserved architectural details blend seamlessly with thoughtful modern touches, creating an atmosphere that honours both heritage and comfort.

Part of the Greyheath Collection, we bring professional hospitality expertise while maintaining the authentic character that makes The Royal George special.

Standing Proud Since 1598

As one of the oldest pubs in Wales, The Royal George has a storied past. From the industrial revolution to William Gilpin's "Observations on the River Wye", it has stood at the core of Tintern's history for centuries.

Local legend says the building even contains timber salvaged from the 18th-century shipwreck HMS Royal George.

The Royal George has welcomed generations of travellers with its timeless warmth and enduring charm.

The Royal George Returns

After a two-year restoration, The Royal George re-opened in August 2025. The building has been brought back to life with its heritage front and centre. Original Welsh flagstones and timber beams have been lovingly revealed, preserving the architectural details and spirit of the hotel.

An earthy colour palette, tactile soft furnishings, reclaimed Welsh Slate, traditional panelling, and limewashed paints provide a contemporary, rustic look and feel.
